The expression public needs to be properly understood in the context of public key cryptography. Public keys are not lying around to be publicly viewed by everyone! Public keys are public in the sense that they can be made available to other users of public key cryptography services. In the commercial environments, public keys are maintained by companies that are referred to as certification authorities (CAs). Several companies (VeriSign, Thawte, GlobalSign, GeoTrust) offer numerous security services that include the issuance of certificates that can be used to distribute public keys to authorized users. Think of the commercial public key cryptography as a subscription service. Authorized subscribers can gain access to the public keys of other subscribers for the purpose of secure communication with them. To learn about the cost of certificates, procedures for their procurement, how to install them on your system, and how they operate, the reader is encouraged to explore the websites of companies that offer certificate services. Public key cryptography services are also available through other means. For example, the OpenSSL library that s available for free supports public key cryptography. The OpenSSL software is recommended for use with the free distribution of NTP version 4. Creating a root object with an object factory The RunLocal attribute can be applied to methods of an object factory and will have the same effect as it would on DataPortal_Fetch(), assuming the assembly containing the object factory class is deployed to the client workstation. It s important to note that the root object s DataPortal_Fetch() or factory object s fetch method is responsible not only for loading the business object s data but also for starting the process of loading the data for its child objects. The key thing to remember is that the data for the entire object, including its child objects, is retrieved when the root object is retrieved. This avoids having to go back across the network to retrieve each child object s data individually. Though the root object gets the data, it s up to each child object to populate itself based on that data. The exception to this is if you choose to use lazy loading to load a child object or collection later in the root object s lifetime. The log file tells us about many of the aspects of our load. We can see the options we used (defaulted or otherwise). We can see how many records were read, how many loaded, and so on. The log files specify the locations of all BAD and DISCARD files. They even tell us how long it took. These log files are crucial for verifying that the load was successful, as well as for diagnosing errors. If the loaded data resulted in SQL errors (i.e., the input data was bad and created records in the BAD file), these errors would be recorded here.
